Types of Vietnamese Tuna for Export: Diverse and High-Quality

Vietnam is a nation with a long coastline and abundant seafood resources, among which tuna is one of the key export items, bringing significant economic value. The types of tuna exploited and exported from Vietnam primarily belong to the “ocean tuna” group, known for their delicious meat quality and superior nutritional value.

1. Main Types of Vietnamese Tuna Exported:

While there are many tuna species worldwide, the two main ones contributing to Vietnam’s export turnover are:

  • Yellowfin Tuna (Thunnus albacares):
    • Characteristics: This is the most common tuna species in Vietnam’s export shipments. Yellowfin tuna have slender bodies with distinctive bright yellow dorsal and anal fins. Their average size ranges from 20-100 kg, but they can grow larger.
    • Meat Quality: Yellowfin tuna meat is deep pink to red, firm, low in fat, and has a delicate sweet flavor. It’s an excellent choice for sashimi, sushi, grilling, and pan-searing.
  • Bigeye Tuna (Thunnus obesus):
    • Characteristics: As its name suggests, Bigeye tuna have larger eyes compared to other tuna species. Their size is similar to yellowfin tuna, but they generally have a rounder body shape.
    • Meat Quality: Bigeye tuna meat is a darker red than yellowfin tuna and has a slightly higher fat content, offering a softer and richer texture when eaten. It’s highly prized for sashimi and high-end dishes.

Additionally, other tuna species like Skipjack Tuna are also caught and processed, primarily for canned tuna products.

2. Main Fishing Regions:

The South Central Coast waters are the key fishing grounds for Vietnam’s ocean tuna exploitation. Prominent provinces include:

  • Phu Yen: The “capital” of the ocean tuna fishing industry, with a large fleet and long-standing fishing experience.
  • Binh Dinh: Along with Phu Yen, Binh Dinh is an important tuna exploitation center, contributing a large output.
  • Khanh Hoa: Its favorable geographical location and developed fishing industry also make Khanh Hoa a significant tuna fishing region.
  • Neighboring provinces: Quang Ngai, Ninh Thuan, and Binh Thuan also have tuna exploitation activities, contributing to the total output.

Tuna are typically caught in offshore fishing grounds, where ecological conditions are favorable for their development.

3. Superior Nutritional Value:

The types of tuna exported by Vietnam are all renowned for their high nutritional value, offering numerous health benefits:

  • Rich in Protein: They provide a source of high-quality protein, essential for muscle development and recovery.
  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids (EPA & DHA): Abundant omega-3 content helps protect cardiovascular health, support brain function, improve vision, and reduce inflammation.
  • Vitamins and Minerals: They contain various B vitamins (B3, B6, B12), vitamin D, selenium, magnesium, potassium, and phosphorus, playing crucial roles in many bodily metabolic processes.
  • Low in Saturated Fat: A healthy choice for diets, helping to control cholesterol and beneficial for heart health.

4. Export Products Derived from Tuna:

From raw tuna, Vietnamese enterprises have developed a diverse range of products to meet the demands of the international market:

  • Whole Frozen Tuna: Intended for markets requiring on-site processing or wishing to control the entire process.
  • Frozen Tuna Loins and Fillets: These are the most common products, pre-processed and cut into convenient portions for restaurants and further processing plants.
  • Canned Tuna: Canned tuna products in oil, brine, or pre-cooked with various sauces, highly popular due to their convenience and long shelf life.
  • Value-added Tuna Products: Including high-end products such as:
    • Frozen Sashimi/Sushi Grade Tuna: Processed from the finest parts of yellowfin and bigeye tuna, blast-frozen to preserve freshness and texture.
    • Tuna Cakes, Shredded Tuna Floss: Traditional and modern processed products.
  • Tuna By-products: Tuna oil (rich in omega-3), tuna meal (for animal feed), etc.

These products strictly adhere to international quality standards such as HACCP, BRC, and ASC, ensuring food safety and clear traceability, allowing Vietnamese tuna to confidently reach global markets.
